Hearing Awareness Week - from 22 August 2010
During Hearing Awareness Week, The Shepherd Centre hosted an Open Day at each of our five centres. Open Days are a great chance for the community to come and meet the families and staff and to take a tour of the centre. Those who attended had the opportunity to observe live Auditory-Verbal Therapy sessions and learn more about the System 5 Cochlear Implant. The Open Days were a great success, THANK YOU to everyone who attended.

Hear for You Mentoring Group conduct their final workshop at The Shepherd Centre...
Over the past five months Hear For You, who provide a mentoring program for hearing impaired adolescents, has conducted 3 workshops, commencing with a meet and greet in February 2010. They finished with their final workshop and graduation at The Shepherd Centre on 6th June, 2010.
Hear for You aim to mentor young deaf people and to help them integrate more effectively into the hearing world. The workshops bring together teenagers with varying levels of hearing loss to help them realise that deafness is more a “difference” than a disadvantage and aim to improve their confidence and help them to develop better social, communication and leadership skills.
The final workshop consisted of parent sessions, a skit performed by the students and two guest speakers who spoke about their experiences of being married to a deaf person and bringing up a hearing impaired teenager. The day finished with an end of program ceremony highlighting the achievements of the students. The day was a real success, with a total of 60 people attending, including the students' parents who arrived in time for the parent sessions and Graduation Ceremony.

Although one-to-one mentoring has ended, the students will continue to receive support via on-line mentoring untill the end of the year.
