Scott Driver - Alumni 1981 to 1985

Scott

I am a past graduate of The Shepherd Centre, attending from 1981 to 1985, as I was born profoundly deaf in both ears.  My parents, Ross and Wendy Driver, also went on a correspondence course because we lived in Bundaberg, Queensland.   Thanks to the support my parents and I received from The Shepherd Centre, I was, and still am, able to speak the oral language so well that everyone refuses to believe that I am deaf!

I live independently in Ipswich with my own house and 4WD.  I am a qualified tradesman having finished my Boilermaking apprenticeship two years ago.  I currently wok for Queensland Rail at the Ipswich workshops as a Boilermaker and undertake other roles in the organisation such as Safety Representative, Occupational First-Aider and Tour Guide.  This is where I take members of the public for a tour of the workshops in support of the Museum next door.

All of this wouldn’t have been possible without The Shepherd Centre’s help and support.  I know all too well the impact of deafness and I am all too aware of what parents of deaf children have to go through as well.  I recently got a group of my friends and colleagues together and we made a donation to the Father’s Day Appeal.  We hope this will be of some help to enable The Shepherd Centre to keep assisting those families in need of help and support.

Best wishes to everyone!
